When Is It Time To Hire a Virtual Assistant?

Hiring a Virtual Assistant for your business team - benefits of a VA by Emily Reagan PR

Lessons from a Digital Marketing Virtual Assistant who actually does the work:

Hey, business owner. I see you. You’re ready to grow and scale up your business. You’ve got hot ideas and a renewed enthusiasm, and this is the year you’re ready to make things happen. And you’re wondering when it’s the best time to see if you’re ready to hire your first virtual assistant.

Maybe you’ve started taking a new course (or three). Or hired your first business coach. It doesn’t take long before you realize two things:

  1. You’ve got tons of plans in the works and your vision is clear, but you’re not quite sure how to make it all actually happen.
  2. Everyone else in your FB business group seems to be hiring a VA or digital media assistant. FOMO, right?

So do you really need a VA to help with your business? How do you know you’re ready to take that next step?

Signs that it’s time to hire your first digital media virtual assistant…

When you…

  • wonder where all your time has gone each work week
  • can’t seem to get ahead
  • spend too much time on the backstage tasks
  • find yourself wishing you could clone yourself
  • work more than 40 hours every week
  • start thinking “no one else can do it but me”
  • want to work on big projects and big goals but don’t have the capacity
  • feel overwhelmed and the burnout is real
  • realize that all the pieces of your business are spinning out of control
  • are doing well in your business and ready to bring it all online

…you might be ready to hire your first virtual assistant.

The Benefits of Hiring a Digital Media VA

You can’t do it alone. Not for long, and not if you want to really maximize your impact.

I get it. This is your baby. It’s pretty scary and intimidating to think about putting it in someone else’s hands.

But if you’ve read this far, I know you’re feeling overwhelmed. You can’t get out of the weeds long enough to do the real work that matters. You can’t grow and make your vision come to life, and your creativity is stifled. Because you’re still spending hours every week trying to work out the kinks in your new email marketing software, or stressing over every single social media post. EVERY. SINGLE. DAY.

And that’s where your unicorn digital marketing assistant comes in.

Earlier this year I interviewed Sarah Masci, whose own digital media marketing business is on fire. Her services are booked out. Want to guess what was the number one reason her business exploded?

Yep. She hired a VA.

And she was able to focus on the 20% of her business that helped her grow and scale up. Meanwhile, her VA helped with the other 80% of the tasks that had been dragging Sarah down every day.

But what if you’re not actually ready?

Because that happens too. I get contacted by a lot of brand new business owners and clients who want to hire one of my unicorns.

And sometimes, I know they’re not ready. They don’t have a clear goal or vision for their business. They have that beginning concept and inspiration, but no real business plan or comprehensive idea of what they will actually be able to offer.

And obviously, they aren’t even making any money yet.

They’re probably new to the soloprenuer space. There’s that spark of creativity and they’re eager to turn it into something real. Or they have a successful brick & mortar business and want to branch into the online space, but aren’t actually sure what that might look like.

And they’ve usually signed up for a course where one of the first things they learn is that they need to hire a digital media sidekick. Unfortunately, they just might not be ready yet.

If that sounds familiar – then it might not be the right time to hire. Because as much as I have shared about all of the benefits that a unicorn VA can bring to your business, I also know that they aren’t magicians.

You – the business owner – might have to do some background work first. Do your research and get some solid ground under your dreams.

So if that’s where you are, spend some time honing in on your idea. Create a solid business plan. Get a clear concept of what you want for your virtual biz. Visualize what you hope your business will look like in three months, six months, a year. And think about what work you need to do now to make that happen.

You don’t have to have all of the small details worked out. And don’t stress about all the techie parts and the implementation. Because once you’ve done your foundation work, THEN you can hire that unicorn VA to help bring all those digital marketing pieces to life.
