What is Funnel Building? Why You Should Offer This High-Value Service

If you think email marketing and funnel building are the same thing, you’re not alone. Many virtual assistants, freelance marketers, and even business owners assume that sending emails equals having a funnel. But here’s the truth: while they work together, they serve very different purposes in a business.

Understanding the difference between email marketing and funnel building is the key to offering more value to your clients, moving beyond basic VA tasks, and commanding higher rates as a digital marketing professional. If you’ve been publishing emails but want to step into more strategic (and better-paying) work, this post is for you.

If you’re a virtual assistant or freelance marketer, chances are you’ve worked on an email campaign or scheduled a few broadcasts for a client. But here’s the thing: Email marketing isn’t just about hitting “send” on a newsletter. And funnel building? That’s where the real strategy (and the higher-paying work!) comes into play.

I’m Emily Reagan, and I help freelancers go from behind-the-scenes support roles to sought-after digital marketing pros inside my Unicorn Digital Marketing Assistant School. My mission is simple: to equip women with the in-demand marketing skills that allow them to work on their own terms—without being stuck in low-paying, admin-heavy VA roles. Inside my Digital Marketer’s Workgroup, I’ve seen it happen again and again: freelancers start by managing a client’s email list, then realize they can offer so much more. They begin learning funnel strategy, automation, and conversion-focused marketing—and suddenly, they’re booking premium projects and commanding higher rates.

So, what’s the difference between email marketing and funnel building? Are they the same thing? And if you want to help your clients grow their audience and sales, where should you start? Let’s break it down.

Email Marketing: The Foundation of Sales

Email marketing is the broader practice of sending emails to engage, nurture, and communicate with an audience. This is the heartbeat of any online business. No matter how much success a client has on TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, or even with a podcast, their real long-term success depends on getting people onto their email list. Why? Because email marketing allows direct, personalized communication that social media can’t guarantee.

Here’s what email marketing typically includes:

  • Weekly (or monthly) newsletters
  • Product updates and promotions
  • Nurture sequences to warm up an audience
  • Special announcements or launches
  • Re-engagement campaigns for inactive subscribers

The goal? Keeping your client’s brand top of mind, building relationships, and ensuring that when it’s time to sell, their audience is ready to buy.

Funnel Building: The Money-Making Machine in Email Marketing

An email funnel, on the other hand, is a structured, strategic path designed to take someone from casual interest to action—whether that’s signing up, purchasing, or booking a call. Funnels live within email marketing, but they have a very specific focus: CONVERSION.

Think of it this way:

  • Email marketing is like having a conversation with a friend over coffee.
  • An email funnel is like having a structured sales call that leads to a clear outcome.

A sales funnel, for example, moves people through a journey, guiding them from free content (a lead magnet, webinar, or challenge) to an eventual purchase. You’ve seen funnels everywhere, like when you click on an Instagram ad and don’t buy right away, but get retargeted with emails later. Or when you fill out a form with a potential service provider, and they call you back. Or when you spin the wheel and get 10% off your e-commerce order.

How does Funnel Building Fit into Email Marketing?

Funnels use email as a tool, but the emails within the funnel are carefully planned and sequenced to drive action. This could include:

  • A lead magnet funnel, where someone downloads a freebie and is nurtured through a follow-up sequence.
  • A tripwire funnel, where there is a low-ticket offer ($9-$47) that’s immediately presented to new subscribers to qualify leads.
  • A webinar funnel, where an email sequence drives people who registered or attended the webinar toward a sale.
  • A pitch sequence, where emails overcome objections and close a sale over a few days.

So, Which Comes First for the Client? Email Marketing or Funnel Building?

If your client is starting from zero, the FIRST thing they need is a lead generation system—an email marketing strategy that includes a way to capture leads. This means they should have:

  1. A lead magnet (a valuable freebie that solves a quick problem for their audience).
  2. A landing page where people opt in.
  3. A nurture sequence to build trust and warm their audience up for future offers.

If you’re a new digital marketing assistant or new to funnel building, this is a gateway service that will lead to making more money and getting better clients. Once you’ve got the funnel building basics down, you can start building out more advanced email funnels that increase sales and drive predictable revenue for your clients. You can start charging more because your clients will pay more for services that make them money.

🔥Hot Tip: Always check out your prospect’s funnels, newsletter sign-ups, lead magnets and offers before a discovery call to see what they’re doing.

Email Marketing Services vs. Funnel Building Services: Which Should You Offer?

If you’re a freelancer or VA looking to grow your marketing skills and increase your income, understanding the difference between email marketing services and funnel building services can help you land the right clients and charge higher rates.

Email Marketing Services = Recurring, Consistent Work

Email marketing is a great entry point into digital marketing because businesses need it regularly. If a client has an email list, they need help with:

  • Writing and scheduling weekly newsletters
  • Managing email lists and segmenting subscribers
  • Creating automated sequences for new subscribers (nurture sequences)
  • Sending promotional emails for product launches

Since email marketing requires ongoing strategy and execution, offering it as a service can create steady, retainer-based income for freelancers.

Funnel Building Services = High-Value, Project-Based Work

Funnel building, on the other hand, is more than just emails—it’s about creating a complete system that turns leads into buyers. Projects often include:

  • Designing landing pages and opt-in forms
  • Setting up automated email sequences
  • Running Facebook or Google ads to drive traffic
  • Tracking conversions and optimizing results

Because funnels directly impact sales and revenue, clients are willing to pay more for them. If you want to move into higher-paying, strategic marketing roles, learning funnels is the way to go.

Where to Start?

If you’re just getting into email marketing and funnels, start with a simple email automation that delivers a lead magnet (such as a free PDF, checklist, or webinar). This helps you build confidence while offering immediate value to clients. From there, you can start layering in funnel-building skills and taking on bigger projects.

The Takeaway:

Funnel Building Should Matter to You

Most clients don’t just need help sending newsletters. They need someone who understands the bigger picture—someone who can connect the dots between their content, their offers, and their revenue.

When you position yourself as a contractor who can not only manage their email marketing but can also build and optimize their funnels, you instantly increase your value. (And increasing your rates can follow!). This is how you move from a task-doer to a revenue-generating strategist.

If you’re new, start with email marketing. Learn the basics. Then, dive into email funnels and help your clients make more sales on autopilot.
